Course Summary

This course is designed to help build competencies in best practice mineral deposit evaluation.

The course is for professionals with a basic understanding of mineral resource estimation and linear geostatistics. Over the four days, participants will learn about:

  • the mining project development cycle and studies that are carried out at different stages of the cycle (e.g. conceptual, pre-feasibility, and feasibility studies);
  • the fundamental concepts of controls of mineralization and the different styles of mineralization;
  • the importance of assay and geology field data quality and understanding of data through exploratory data analyses;
  • interpolation techniques, with focus on the kriging technique; and
  • resource classification and validation of resource estimation and reporting.

Participants will also learn about software tools used in resource estimation. Participants are encouraged to bring their laptop computers loaded with their preferred software application.

This is a highly interactive course where participants are encouraged to learn through discussion, group tasks, and quizzes.

At the end of the course, participants will have learned the procedures and best practices used in resource estimation, classification, and reporting mineral resources as per international guidelines.

Who Should Attend?

Entry level to mid-career geologists, mining engineers, project managers from mineral exploration and mining projects, consultants, and anyone else that wants to understand mineral deposit evaluation.

Pre-Course e-Learning

Prior to the course, registered participants have access to online e-learning material consisting of three courses: Practical Geostatistics 2000 - 2: Spatial Statistics, Quality Control of Geochemical and Assay Samples, and Mineral Project Reporting Under NI 43-101. This gives participants the opportunity to read up or get up to speed on a topic before learning directly from an expert.

Certificate in Mining Studies

This course qualifies for four days of short course credit for the Certificate in Mining Studies (CMS), a continuing education program of accredited short courses, webcasts and online courses for lifelong learning in mining, supported by University of British Columbia, University of Arizona and University of Concepción. more details »

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Registered participants who attend the entire short course and complete an evaluation at the end of the course will receive a Certificate of Attendance, confirming the Professional Development Hours (PDH)/Continuing Education Units (CEU) earned. Please confirm with your employer and/or professional association that this course qualifies for CPD.

Abani Samal

Dr. Abani R. Samal is well recognized as an economic geologist, a geostatistician, and a leader in mining industry. His expertise lies in mineral deposit evaluation, resources estimation, and advanced geostatistical analyses. He holds an M.Tech degree from IIT(ISM), Dhanbad, India; an MS and DIC from Imperial College London, UK; and a PhD from SIU-Carbondale, USA.

Dr. Samal has over 20 years of experience working on exploration and mining projects around the world. He started his career as a mine geologist at a chromite mine in India. He was lead geologist and geostatistician with Pincock, Allen, and Holt (now RPM Global) in Denver, USA, and was Principal Advisor—Geology for Rio Tinto based out of Salt Lake City, USA. In 2015, Dr. Samal founded GeoGlobal LLC, and provides consulting services to exploration and mining projects worldwide.

Dr. Samal gained his expertise from working on many projects covering resource estimation, mine to mill reconciliations, exploration planning and resource assessments, detailed audits, reviews, and risk-based resource assessments and risk analyses for project financing and legal projects. These projects gave him exposure to a wide variety of deposit types, including nickel laterites, iron ore deposits, base metal vein deposits, copper-gold porphyry deposits, sediment-hosted copper deposits, and uranium sand stone hosted deposits.

Dr. Samal practices as a qualified person (QP) globally. He maintains the Registered Membership of SME and a Certified Professional Geologist (CPG) with AIPG, and he is an honorary representative of the CRIRSCO in India.

Dr. Samal is passionate about teaching and provides training programs and short courses in the areas of mineral resource estimation, applied geostatistics, and mine to mill reconciliation.
