Introduction

This course is the fourth in a comprehensive series of five mine ventilation courses by the author, written for practicing professionals. The complete series includes the following titles:

The basic focus for this course series is on airflow engineering. This is because getting the right amount of fresh air to the workplace is the single most important success factor in meeting the quality and quantity requirements of an efficient, safe and healthy underground mining operation.

The courses are also designed to ensure the ventilation practitioner has an adequate understanding of at least the basic issues involved in mine ventilation, and therefore knows when a ventilation problem is of such magnitude as to need to call in a specialist, and has sufficient background to be able to liaise technically with that specialist.

Course Content

This course comprises 22 learning sessions, each of 30 - 60 minutes duration, plus supporting figures, tables, images and references, appendices and interactive reviews that confirm achievement of the learning objectives. The total duration of the course is estimated at 22 hours.

  • Identify and apply the principles of ventilation design to development, auxiliary, production and fixed plant ventilation for both hard rock and coal mining application.

Rick Brake

Dr. Rick Brake is a Chartered Practicing Mining Engineer, based in Brisbane, Australia, with 30 years experience in underground and open cut operations in Australia and North America. He graduated with First Class Honours from the University of Queensland and has since completed a Master of Business Administration from Deakin University in Victoria and a PhD in physiology from Curtin University in Perth in the area of human heat stress. He has statutory qualifications in both coal and metalliferous mine ventilation and is a Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, a member of the Mine Ventilation Society of South Africa, and a Member of the Minerals Industry Consultants Association of Australia.

Rick was Ventilation Superintendent for the four Mount Isa underground mines in the mid 1980s. He has been a member of the Editorial and Organising Committees for several major ventilation conferences. In 1999, he formed his own consulting company, Mine Ventilation Australia, specialising in the areas of sub-surface ventilation, mine refrigeration and cooling, heat stress and egress and entrapment. His company has subsequently consulted to many underground mines in Australia, PNG, China, South-East Asia and Africa. He also presents many courses and seminars on mine ventilation, egress and entrapment, and heat stress.
